Weber leads the Predators, Tokarski saves the Habs, Fantasy tips and more in Scott Cullens Statistically Speaking. HEROES Shea Weber - The Predators franchise blueliner scored a pair of goals in a 3-2 win against St. Louis. While Weber is taking heat from the analytics crowd this season, posting the worst relative possession stats of his career, hes also putting up points, including 10 points (2 G, 8 A) in his past nine games. That lifted his save percentage to .924 in eight games, a nice contribution from the backup, and putting him in good company among backup goaltenders this season. ZEROES Gilbert & Emelin - The Montreal defence pairing of Tom Gilbert and Alexei Emelin spent most of the night chasing Panthers in the defensive zone, with Emelin (7 shot attempts for, 20 against, 25.9%) posting the worst possession stats among Habs defencemen. Nail Yakupov - Even in a rare Oilers win, they got more of the same from their young winger. Yakupov started 75% of shifts against Los Angeles in the offensive zone, yet finished with 27.6% (8 for, 21 against) of even-strength shot attempts. Hes the rare forward to start more than two-thirds of his shifts in the offensive zone this season, yet fall below break-even on attempted shot differential. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Brian Elliott - Returned to the St. Louis net, for his first game since November 25 after suffering a lower-body injury, and stopped 44 of 47 shots in a 3-2 loss at Nashville. Derek Roy - Made his Oilers debut, registering an assist, and playing 14:53, primarily on a line with Teddy Purcell and Nail Yakupov. Brayden McNabb - The Kings defenceman left Tuesdays 3-2 shootout loss to Edmonton after getting clipped with a high stick by Oilers rookie Leon Draisaitl. Nikita Nikitin - Returned to the Oilers lineup for his first game since December 3, yet played a modest 11:15 against Los Angeles. SHORT SHIFTS The Predators got two-point games from both LW Gabriel Bourque and RW Olli Jokinen in their 3-2 win over St. Louis. Coming into the game, Bourque and Jokinen had combined for five points this season and had the two lowest ice times in the game for Nashville. Jokinen also had the best possession stats (18 shot attempts for, 6 against, 75.0%) for the Predators. Panthers G Roberto Luongo stopped 33 of 34 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to Montreal…Oilers G Ben Scrivens turned aside 37 of 39 shots in a 3-2 shootout win against Los Angeles; it was his first win this season while recording more than 32 saves…Canucks G Ryan Miller had 31 saves on 32 shots in a 3-1 win at San Jose. FANTASY TIPS Its a busy night on the ice for the last day of 2014, so here are half a dozen players that you may want to get into your lineup: Mathieu Perreault - Leads the Jets with 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in 12 games in December, not bad considering his start to the season, which included no goals and three assists through his first 19 games. Andrei Vasilevskiy - Tampa Bays top goaltending prospect was recalled from the AHL, again, and it looks as though hell get the start against Buffalo. He stopped 94 of 100 shots in three games with the Lightning recently, when Ben Bishop was injured. Loui Eriksson - Hes still not generating shots like he did during his peak years in Dallas, but Eriksson has eight points (4 G, 4 A) in his past six games. Matt Calvert - The Blue Jackets winger has only nine points in 25 games this season, but has four points (1 G, 3 A) in the past four games and played a season-high 21:33 last game. Justin Abdelkader - On a three-game point streak, the Detroit winger has been playing and scoring more this year, thanks in large part to frequent linemates Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Colton Sceviour - Getting a chance with Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin on the Stars top line, Sceviour has five points (1 G, 4 A) in his past seven games. Penn fills the opening created when Jared Veldheer left as a free agent for Arizona and left unfilled when Rodger Saffold failed his physical after agreeing to a five-year, $42.5 million deal with Oakland. NFL Network reported that Penns contract is worth $9.6 million with $4.2 million guaranteed. Oakland also announced that safety Usama Young officially signed the two-year deal he agreed to last week to return to the Raiders. Penn, who turns 30 next month, was released earlier this month by Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers signed Anthony Collins to a five-year, $30 million contract to take over at left tackle. Penn struggled in pass protection last season with Tampa Bay, allowing 12 sacks, including nine in the final six games, according to Pro Football Focus. Only one tackle -- Will Beatty of the Giants -- was blamed for more sacks last season. Penn also allowed 28 quarterback hurries and six quarterback hits and ranked in the middle of the pack in terms of total pressures allowed. Penn was more successful as a run blocker -- an area where the Raiders needed improvement this off-season. He has played in 122 career games over his eigght seasons with Tampa Bay, including 108 consecutive starts at left tackle since 2007.dddddddddddd. Penn visited Oakland last week but left without signing a deal. He then met with the Washington Redskins about playing right tackle before finally ending up back with the Raiders. The Raiders have placed a high priority in free agency on upgrading the offensive line, having also reached deals with right tackle Austin Howard and interior lineman Kevin Boothe. They also re-signed Khalif Barnes before he hit the open market. The Raiders had little continuity on the line last season as injuries and poor play forced Oakland to use eight different starting line combinations. Young joined Oakland last season on a one-year deal with expectations of becoming the starting free safety. But a little more than a month after signing Young, the Raiders signed Charles Woodson to a one-year deal to fill that spot. Young moved into a backup role and played well when he got his chance on defence and special teams. He started once in his 12 games before being placed on injured reserve with a neck injury in December. The 29-year-old Young had one interception, three passes defenced and 2 1/2 sacks last season with the Raiders, playing about one-quarter of the defensive snaps when healthy. ' ' '
