The Toronto Maple Leafs signed restricted free agent defenceman Jake Gardiner to a five-year contract on Tuesday. The deal is worth $20.25 million with an average annual value of $4.05 million per season. The 24-year-old defenceman scored 10 goals and 11 assists in 80 games with the Maple Leafs in 2013-14. He is coming off the final year of a three-year entry-level deal he signed prior to the 2011-12 season worth an average annual value of $1.117 million including performance bonuses. Gardiner was drafted in the first round (17th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft by the Anaheim Ducks. He was acquired by the Leafs, along with Joffrey Lupul, in exchange for Francois Beauchemin. In 167 career games, Gardiner has scored 17 goals and added 48 assists. He won a gold medal as a member of the American team at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championship and was also named a member of the NHLs All-Rookie Team in 2011-12.
